Family group
We run monthly Family Groups in Derby on the last Sunday of every month, and in Chesterfield on the second Sunday of the month - please refer to our main calendar below to check if groups are running.
At each group, we simply connect over a drink and conversation. There are plenty of toys, crafts, books to get involved with. You can see the set up of our space in photos below.
Our groups are an informal and safe space for LGBT+ family of any size and make up, whether the parent/carer/relative is LGBT+ or the child or young person is LGBT+ or questioning.
Maybe you’re new to the area and want to meet other LGBT+ families? Perhaps you are an LGBT+ parent and want to connect with others on the same journey? Maybe your sibling is LGBT+ and you want to learn more about how to support them? You could be considering fostering or adoption? Any LGBT+ people and their partners, relatives or friends are welcome to join the family group session.
The groups are led by experienced LGBT+ family volunteers who are DBS checked, with active safeguarding procedures to protect attendees.
Simply drop in, but keep an eye on our social media incase a group is cancelled, and message if you have any additional needs our volunteers would benefit from knowing about.
If you have any questions, email us on info@derbyshirelgbt.org.uk or give us a ring on 01332 207 704.

Useful information for our Family Group

Once you ring the white doorbell, one of our team/volunteers will welcome you in, sign you into the building and show you the space we’re in.
In Derby, the room has cushy seating around edges for conversations, in the middle there will be tables with activities, and a quiet space for a breather. The windows of the space are blacked out with outdoor window graphics so we are out of the passer-by’s view.
There is a full run through in video form of the space on our socials here.
In Chesterfield, we might be split across two rooms next to each other - one which is better for crafting and creating, and other which is better for chatting and playing. There is a waiting area too which can be used for a taking a breather.
If you’re new to our groups, we’ll also ask you to complete a form telling us a little bit about yourself. You’re then welcome to use anything in the space - toys, books, crafts - and dip into anything provided in the kitchen - tea, coffee, hot choc.

Yes, we will be inside (in a warm heated room). We hope that you can join us whatever the weather as long as it is safe for you (and us) to travel.

You are very welcome to bring someone who is an LGBT+ ally with you who you consider family. Alternatively, get in touch with us - we can say hello before the day so there is a familiar face in the space. Our Community Café drop in is open every Wednesday in Derby and Thursday in Chesterfield at the same space between 11am and 3pm if you’d like to trial the travel, see the space and meet us before the Family Group.
